Davidsonville 21035, Harwood 20776 and Riva 21140 are neighboring Maryland communities located in Anne Arundel County, which is in the central part of the state only about 12 miles west of downtown Annapolis, Maryland's state capital.
In 2010, Anne Arundel County’s total population was 537,656. It rests comfortably on more than 534 miles of coastline connected to the legendary shores of Chesapeake Bay. With all of this water nearby, it’s no surprise that the county is famous for its numerous aquatic activities, such as fishing, boating, crabbing, sailing, swimming, and water skiing.
Shopping and Dining
As you might expect from a rural county, there is little commercial development in these communities; however, on the plus side there is also no high density housing.
Another plus for the residents of Anne Arundel County who like to shop and dine (which is pretty much everyone, right?) is their close proximity to three large metropolitan areas. Only 35 miles south of Baltimore, and with the Nation’s Capitol, Washington, D.C. less than 30 miles to the east, you can bet that shopping and dining options abound in and around Anne Arundel County.
One-stop shopping and dining can be found at the Westfield Annapolis shopping center, one of the Chesapeake Bay area's premier shopping, dining and entertainment destinations. Among the mall’s 238 stores are the Apple Store, JCPenney, Macy’s, Pottery Barn and GameStop. Restaurants in Westfield Annapolis include Applebee’s, McCormick & Schmick Seafood Restaurant, Punk’s Backyard Grill, as well as numerous fast food restaurants.
If you’re looking for a non-mall dining option and you like seafood, check out Mike’s Crab House in Riva. Mike’s has been serving up terrific crab and seafood since 1958. And this year, the restaurant won the Best Crab House, Best Crab Cake, and Best Crab Soup titles in Bay Weekly magazine's annual Best of the Bay contest.
Parks and Recreation
There are more than 140 wildlife sanctuaries and recreational parks within Anne Arundel County. In fact, the county’s Recreation and Parks Department manages and maintains more than 1,000 acres of land. This includes vast open spaces, community and regional parks and facilities, as well as land designated as environmental, historical, and archaeological preserves.
The county also offers specialized recreational facilities, including two swim centers, two golf courses, and a baseball stadium and softball complex. Also, check into one of the extensive program offerings, such as school-age childcare and adaptive recreation.
In addition to all of the water recreation opportunities mentioned above, you can shoot a round of golf at Renditions Golf Course in Davidsonville. And if you’re into horses, you’re in the right place. The landscape is comprised principally of historic estates, rolling hills, equestrian trails, and horse ranches.
Homes in Anne Arundel County tend to come with large parcels of land attached to them due to the county’s zoning restrictions. Even so, there are a number of family communities in Davidsonville, including Kings Retreat, Cottage Farm Estates, and Eickleberry Woods.Living
Even though they’re so close to the large metropolitan areas Baltimore and Washington, D.C. (and close to sophisticated Annapolis), Davidsonville, Riva and Harwood are primarily rural communities, where farms and single family homes are the norm.
Among these three towns, Davidsonville and Harwood are officially considered to be unincorporated, whereas Riva is a census-designated place (CDP). This scenic area is growing due in part to the expansion of suburban Annapolis. Riva’s population in 2007 was 4,131.
Schools, Health, Transportation
