The St. Margaret’s area of Annapolis, also called Broadneck, is a more rural neighborhood in the northeast of the greater Annapolis metropolitan area. You’ll find Annapolis Broadneck across the Severn River Bridge, heading east on Route 50, a Blue Star Memorial Highway, toward the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, only about 10 minutes from Annapolis. Cape St. Claire is the largest community on Broadneck with plenty of amenities for everyone: A large sandy beach, several launching ramps, piers for your boats, playgrounds, athletic fields for organized sports teams, a community clubhouse, churches and a local shopping center with one of everything. Most of the shops are operated by the owners. One local favorite is Broadneck Grill within the Cape St. Claire shopping center. Broadneck Grill offer both American favorites and Mexican dishes. If fresh seafood is what you're after be sure to visit Cantler's. Locally owned, Cantler's waterfront restaurant and crab house sits on the waters of Mill Creek. Locally owned Whimsicality is a wonderful shop offering everything you might need for decorating, entertaining or gifts. Grauls Market has been a staple in the community for all of your grocery needs. The Broadneck Peninsula also has two golf courses (and many water privileged communities for your family). And, for the family-minded, the schools are excellent.

Home prices on the Lower Broadneck Peninsula range from $300,000 for a single family split foyer to luxury waterfront properties and estates in the millions and everything in between. St. Margaret's area was at one time all farmland and the homes in this area are mostly on large pieces of land and are still surrounded by farmland. There are several townhome communities on Broadneck including Woods Landing, Whispering Woods, Walnut Ridge, and Revell Downs. For those looking for single-family homes be sure to visit Chesapeake Preserve, Bay Head, Cape St. Claire, Atlantis and Beacon View.

At the lower end of the Broadneck Peninsula is the 4.3 mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge. This dual span bridge connects the Eastern and Western Shores of Maryland and includes the 786 acre Sandy Point State Park. This magnificent State Park on the Broadneck Peninsula is a recreational paradise with beaches and picnic areas that provide unparalleled views of the Chesapeake Bay and a host of summer and winter activities. The main marina offers 22 boat launching ramps for boats and personal water craft. There is also a small craft launch area for kayak, catamaran and hobby cats. Visitors to Sandy Point also enjoy wildlife viewing and bird watching. The Broadneck Peninsula is a great place to live, work and play.

Anne Arundel County, of which Annapolis Broadneck is a part, was first settled by Europeans in the winter of 1649/50 by Puritans and Independents from Virginia who refused to comply with Governor Berkley’s demand that they attend the services of the Church of England. The county, officially formed the following summer, was the third formed in Maryland and was named for Lady Anne Arundel, wife of the Lord Baltimore who brought both her name and considerable fortune to the New World when she married.

Despite the Puritans dislike of the imposition of the Church of England, it is parish records and Quaker meeting minutes that have provided a wealth of historical and genealogical data about the area.

Today, the Lower Broadneck community may provide just the escape you need from the hustle of busy city life while still offering all the amenities you could ever wish for.
