Evolving from a small mining town to a thriving suburb, Glen Burnie, Maryland is located in the northern, unincorporated area of Anne Arundel County. Just ten miles south of Baltimore and a short drive from Fort Meade, Glen Bernie was established as a county seat in 1812 by attorney by the name of Elias Glen. The name changed to Glennsbourne Farm and eventually Glenburnie as it was passed through Glen’s descendants; its official recognition as a state subdivision came in 1888.

Some of the oldest churches and schools in the area were built in Glen Burnie, like St. Alban’s Episcopal Church which was built with bricks dating back to the 1730’s. The weather patterns range from hot and humid summers to mild and chilly winters. The latest U.S. Census Bureau data puts the population of Glen Burnie around 67,639.

Shopping and Dining

A quick drive along Ritchie Highway offers a variety of independently owned shops and restaurants. Bargain shoppers will appreciate The Big MD Marketplace which hosts a variety of seasonal craft sales and flea markets.

Glen Burnie has many dining options from familiar chains to independently-owned eateries. Seaside Restaurant and Crab House is a popular neighborhood hangout with a large menu and outdoor seating in the summer. House specialties include fried hard crab orange roughy, and crab cakes. For fine dining, a reservation at The Sunset Restaurant is in order. Mi Pueblo serves up traditional Mexican food and locals can also choose from a variety of locally owned diners and pizza chains.

Parks and Recreation

Locals and visitors to Glen Burnie take advantage of the ample year-round recreational opportunities. Take in 18 holes at the Arundel Golf Park or go crabbing in the Chesapeake Bay in the summer. The Glen Burnie Park is open year round and is equipped with softball fields, a tennis court and playground. In the winter you can lace up your ice skates and take a spin around the outdoor ice rink at the Glen Burnie Town Center. The ice rink is open seven days a week and can be rented for birthday parties or lessons.

Sawmill Creek Park  is also open year round with a skateboard park, basketball and tennis courts and a playground and fitness course. Paved biking and walking trails are available and the pavilion can be reserved for picnics and parties.  The skateboard park was recently closed due to vandalism but was re-opened after an outpouring of support from the community.

Living

Glen Burnie real estate offers a mix of single-family homes, retirement complexes, and apartment homes. Many of the homes are located near retail settings so driving times for shopping can be short; the compactness of their community is something the locals accept with pride. Schools, Health, Transportation

Like many of the cities and towns in the area, education spending is higher than the national average. Twenty-one public and six private schools are located within Glen Burnie, which is in the Anne Arundel School District. First Avenue Elementary School was built in 1899 and is one of the first schools to open in the area. Access to higher education in surrounding cities is ample with a variety of community colleges, state universities and prestigious private colleges in and around Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington D.C.

Baltimore Washington Medical Center serves the area and specializes in cardiac care and wellness, emergency medicine and cancer and vascular care. American Radiology Services is also located in Glen Burnie. Other prestigious hospitals can be found in the Baltimore and the Annapolis areas.

Glen Burnie is served by local bus #14 that runs regularly from Baltimore to Annapolis. The Light Rail Line, is part of the Maryland Transit Administration and runs from Baltimore to central Glen Burnie.

Baltimore Washington International Airport is the closest airport with many direct flights national and international destinations.
