Located in the Baltimore-Washington Metro Area, the Anne Arundel County School District is the 5th largest school district in Maryland and the 46th largest in the United States. This area is known to have one of the highest concentrations of highly educated residents in the United States and is known for its good schools and having access to quality education. The State of Maryland is ranked 10th in the nation for school funding which allows for more qualified teachers in each classroom.

Anne Arundel County Schools

The Anne Arundel County School District operates 125 schools in the area with 78 Elementary Schools, 19 Middle Schools and 12 High Schools. Twelve Anne Arundel County schools are National Blue Ribbon Schools and fifteen schools have the distinguished Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence award. In addition to the public schools, the district also operates three charter schools and four magnet schools for middle and high school aged students looking for specialized education and courses in science, engineering, business, tourism and transportation. Anne Arundel County School District offers plenty of options in the county’s thriving private-school system. Many of these schools are parochial schools sponsored by Lutheran, Catholic, and Evangelical churches but there are some non-parochial schools like Gibson Island Country School, Montessori International Children’s House, the Harbor School at Annapolis and the London Towne Academy.

Arts, Athletics, Music

In addition to receiving a top-notch education in Anne Arundel County schools, students experience the arts and participate in athletics outside of the classroom setting. The Fine Arts Dance Program gives elementary, middle school and high school students the chance to learn movement and dance and how to express their feelings through performance-based creativity.

The dance program is part of the elementary school P.E. Curriculum and students can take more classes as they get older. Middle School students elect to take year-long fine arts dance classes which includes ballet, jazz, tap, choreography, dance history and dancer health instruction. Students in these classes participate in a spring concert and various dance festivals in the area.

The music program in Anne Arundel County schools offers curriculum and instruction for budding musicians and students interested in learning about music. The district offers lessons and instructions and opportunities to perform in local and state-wide festivals.

For kids who prefer sports to arts and music, the Anne Arundel County Schools athletic programs has team sports and interscholastic programs that teach kids about team dynamics and how to stay motivated in their chosen sports. The physical education programs in the schools are developed to help kids learn about movement, health and wellness as they grow.

Higher Education

Students in Anne Arundel County typically receive high rankings on national testing and the schools in the district rank near or above the state averages for college readiness, Math and English. To help kids think ahead for life and the workplace, the district provides parents and students with a career readiness program called The Great Eight. This program was developed as a resource for parents to create rigorous guideposts for graduation and to ensure their kids are getting the most out of their education.

For students looking to move on to higher education after high school, one option is the Anne Arundel Community College. This fully-accredited two-year college was named ‘Community College of the Year’ in 2000 by the National Business Alliance. Students can choose from more than 200 areas of study and 2,000 classes. The Anne Arundel Community College serves adults and students looking for job certification, extra training or just wishing to go back to school after a brief break. For other higher education options there is the University of Maryland at Annapolis, Johns Hopkins University – which has campuses in Annapolis and Glen Burnie, and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.
