Anne Arundel County, Maryland

Anne Arundel County, Maryland

Anne Arundel County, Maryland is home to the U.S. Army’s Fort Meade, the U.S. Naval Academy and the city of Annapolis, to name but a few. Anne Arundel County is part of the Baltimore – Washington, DC metropolitan area, which has a total population of more than five million residents as of the 2010 census; Anne Arundel County itself is home to about 540,000 people. The area’s population is the most educated, highest-income in the United States.

Involved since the earliest days of United States formation, Anne Arundel County supplied troops for three regiments of the Continental Army. Again, during the war of 1812, the USS Constitution sailed from Annapolis, the capital of Maryland. The county is named for Anne Arundel (1615 – 1649), a member of an ancient British family in Cornwall, England. She married Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, bringing her name and her fortune to the area. The real estate now known as Arundel County boasts the United State’s first railroad, providing the first regular passenger service in the nation in 1830. It was drawn by horses and traveled a mere 13 miles, from Mount Clare Station in Baltimore City to Ellicott Mills in Anne Arundel County. The more than 100 pieces of real estate listed on the National Register of Historic Places is too numerous to list here, but can be found on a variety of websites.

Today, Anne Arundel County, Maryland has only two incorporated municipalities: Annapolis, incorporated in 1708 and Highland Beach, incorporated 214 years later, in 1922. Numerous other towns exist without benefit of incorporation as municipalities (without city government). The U.S. Census Bureau recognizes 31 other towns and 29 more exist as independent communities with local names.

Real estate in Anne Arundel County, Maryland is close to a dizzying mix of all things U.S.; monuments, cemeteries, architecture, and, of course, the business of being the United States of America, nearby in Washington, DC and spilling out into the surrounding communities. There is probably no more fascinating place in the United States to live and work.
