Tips

  • Call doctors and dentists. They may recommend a colleague near your new home. Get copies of renewable prescriptions and request medical and dental records.
  • Check homeowners insurance policies to see if moving is covered.  Be sure your new home is protected by transferring fire, theft and other personal property insurance. Transfer personal insurance records.
  • If you have pets, request your pet's records from the veterinarian.
  • Return library books and other things you've borrowed.  Collect the things you've loaned, and items in the dry-cleaners, lay-away, cold storage, safety deposit box, etc.
  • Transfer bank accounts, and if necessary, ask your local credit bureau to transfer your records to your new city. Consider carrying traveler's checks for quick, available funds.
  • Set aside valuables and legal documents to go with you, not the moving van.Take your local telephone directory with you as well as important telephone numbers. Make copies of all inportant documents.
  • Fill out an IRS change of address form.
  • Take inventory of your belongings before they're packed, in case you need to file an insurance claim. Take pictures or video tape your belongings. Record serial numbers of electronic equipment.
  • Make arrangements with a moving company or reserve a rental truck. Be sure to get several quotes and look for a company that is fully insured and bonded.
  • Have you left anything behind in the other house? It never hurts to double check closets, drawers, shelves, attic, basement, and garage one last time before you leave.
