Historic London Town and Gardens

by John Collins, REALTOR

Historic London Town and Gardens is owned by Anne Arundel County and operated by the London Town Foundation. Encompassing 23 acres, Historic London Town and Gardens is located in Edgewater. The site features a museum, park, and historic buildings and gardens, including the 1760 William Brown House and other reconstructed colonial buildings. Its park and gardens support archaeology, horticulture, and historic preservation, including an archaeological investigation of the “lost town” of London.

London Town was created in 1683 as a tobacco port in the colonial trans-Atlantic trade network. It also served as a ferry crossing on the main colonial north-south route, connecting Charleston with Boston. Originally consisting of 100 acres with one-acre platted lots, London Town rivaled Annapolis in its tobacco trade. London Town’s population was made up of merchants, planters, carpenters, coopers, tavern-keepers, tailors, ferry-masters, mariners, blacksmiths, ropemakers, indentured servants, convict servants, and slaves. As the site of the anne arundel county courthouse in the late 17th century, where cage, whipping post, stocks, and pillory were housed, London Town past reflects the South’s disreputable past. During the Revolutionary War, the lack of trade affected the community. The William Brown House was one of the few buildings to survive, and served as an upscale tavern for ferry travelers. William Brown operated a ferry and inn at London Town, and was also a joiner and cabinetmaker. The Georgian house has a dramatic view of the South View, and is oriented toward Scott Street, which leads to the ferry landing.

anne arundel county Lost Towns Project conducts archaeology at London Town, an ongoing research and public education program that explores colonial period sites throughout the county. Archaeologists, historians, and lab technicians work with the general public to perform original archaeological research, promoting an awareness of environmental conservation and historic preservation. The research identifies 17th and 18th-century lots, excavating plow zones for artifacts. Many Colonial period buildings have been identified through this research.

The historic area offers hands-on experience for visitors, who can watch colonial carpentry at the pit saw frame and Carpenter Shop. London Town has four types of gardens: Woodland, Historical, Ornamental, and Environmental. The Woodland Garden features magnolias, camellias, dogwoods, rhododendrons, and other flora and fauna. The Cook Memorial Gardena and Lillian S. Hall Memorial Garden make up the Ornamental Gardens, and include daylilies, hydrangeas, roses, crepe myrtles, and more. The Environmental Gardens include native and bio-retention gardens. The Historical Gardens include the Colonial Kitchen Garden, African-American Foodways Garden, and Richard Hill Medicinal Garden, providing a view into everyday Colonial life.

Historic London Town and Gardens host weddings, group tours, and other educational events throughout the year.
