Grand Illumination

by John Collins, REALTOR

Winter in Annapolis is a magical season, so it is no surprise that so many people flock to the city to take part in the holiday festivities. Whether you want to enjoy a great restaurant, go on a shopping spree, or watch a holiday light display, Annapolis has it all.

One of the ways that many families celebrate the start of the season is by attending the Grand Illumination. Held from 5-8 pm on Sunday, December 1st, this event includes plenty of glistening lights and merriment. Santa even arrives by horse and carriage much to the delight of all of the children in attendance. This family-friendly event is free, so be sure to mark it on your calendar. It is one event that you will want to attend year after year.

Sponsored by the Annapolis Jaycees, the Grand Illumination is a spectacular way to kick off the downtown holiday season. Established in the 1920s, the Jaycees is a group of young men and women dedicated to developing personal and leadership skills through providing service to others. Well-known for their work with the March of Dimes and the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Jaycees have also helped build houses, parks and assisted with numerous other worthy causes. For over 57 years, the Annapolis chapter has served as a strong presence in the community. They continue to hold events, like the Grand Illumination, that provide tremendous experiences for their members.

Annapolis in the winter is a treat for the senses. The smell of freshly cut trees mingles with the scent of the harbor, while the lights and decorations provide a beautiful sight. The sound of carols and laughter makes the city a truly joyful place. The warm and inviting atmosphere helps to remove the chill of the winter air and makes it easy to understand why so many people love to visit Annapolis during the holidays.

Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot

by John Collins, REALTOR

It's that time of year again when we gather together with family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving! But before you pull out the turkey or dinner rolls, head out the morning of Thanksgiving for the 7th Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot! This holiday 5K race course will start at 9:00 AM and is a free family event for runners and walkers alike. The course will begin at Fleet Foot Sports Annapolis, (318 6th Street, Annapolis, MD).

The race will also be split up into three different start times depending on your running pace.  If you're a faster runner that can pace an 8 1/2 minute mile with confidence, then you're start time will be at 9:00 AM sharp. If you're a solid runner but have a running pace between an 8 1/2 - 10 minute mile, then you'll start your race at 9:03 AM. Finally, if you would like to walk the race, perhaps with a young child, baby stroller or the family dog, then you will start at 9:06 AM.

This fun holiday race is free to the public, however participants are encouraged to donate to this event, which will go towards the charity, Foodlink Maryland. Although orders have been cut off since November 7th for the limited edition Thanksgiving Turkey Trot 5K T-shirts, there will be shirts handed out after the race for a $20 donation if any supplies are available.

There will be gifts handed out to all participants who are wearing Mizuno shoes. In addition, there will be a Grand Prize awarded from Mizuno to the race contestant with the Best Turkey Costume! There will be ample free parking nearby and a light breakfast will be provided by Naval Bagles after the run. Although the race won't be officially timed, there will be a finisher's clock at the finish line.

Register for this event today and have a great Thanksgiving holiday!
